When you open a bank account in Japan, you will get a bank book. You do not receive bank statements. The bank book needs to be updated by the user.

Meaning of entries in the bookEdit

The left hand column is debits and the right hand column is credits to your account. The far-right column shows the balance. The person or organisation who debited or credited your account is also shown.

Updating your bank bookEdit

You can update your bank book in the usual ATMs. However, in Joyo Bank at least, there are machines which are specifically for updating bank books only. Using these means you don't have to queue for the bank machine.
