Getting an International LicenceEdit
International licences can be obtained in the country from which the original driver's license was obtained. For example, American drivers can obtain an international driving permit from the American Automobile Association (AAA). Canadian drivers can obtain an international driving permit from the Canadian Automobile Association (CAA).
International driving permits are usually valid for one year. However, regardless of the validity of the international permit, you may only use the permit for one year after arriving in Japan. After one year, you must obtain a Japanese Driver's Licence to continue driving in Japan.
Getting an International Licence in JapanEdit
If you have a Japanese Driver's Licence, you can get an International Licence at the Ibaraki Prefecture Drivers License Center in Mito or at the Central Police Station in Tsukuba. This will permit you to drive in certain foreign countries.
