Ibaraki International Association (I.I.A.) Tsukuba Office inside Tsukuba Information Center hosts an ikebana class for Japanese and foreign residents in and around Tsukuba.

Purpose of the Class[]

The class is aimed to give both Japanese and foreign participants an opportunity to learn basic skills of ikebana as Japanese traditional culture and to enjoy exchange among participants at the same time.

Instructor[]

Ms. Mitsuho Unno of Kyoto Koryu School gives instructions in Japanese and a staff member of Tsukuba Information Center translates them into English.

Cost[]

Tuition is free, but you have to pay 1,300 yen for flowers each time. Ikebana tools such as scissors, a flat vase, and a kenzan (pinholder) can be purchased at the Information Center if you like.

Application[]

All you have to do is drop by and fill out a registration form at the Tsukuba Information Center. Foreign participants can apply for the class at any time of the year, but it is highly recommended to start in October or in April, when new Japanese participants join the six-month’s course. (The 2005 Fall semester starts on October 5th.) Your flowers will be ordered in advance, so please don’t forget to make a reservation before attending a class.
